- While it’s certainly convenient to purchase sauna stones from a store, it’s also easy (and free) to collect sauna stones yourself.
Can you pour water on dry sauna rocks?
Don’t pour the water, drizzle it over the rocks. You’ll get a better steam and it won’t overwhelm the room and your sauna heater. Most sauna heaters can handle a couple of ladles of water onto the sauna rocks easily, but do it lightly to get the most steam. Remember do NOT dump water on the rocks.

Do sauna rocks need to be replaced?
Generally sauna rocks do not need to be replaced. It’s best to clean them (See FAQ: How should I clean my sauna heater and rocks?) and remove small rocks and any rocks that are cracked. You probably still have some extra rocks you can use when you repack the sauna heater.

How do I make my sauna hotter?
The base of your heater should sit no more than five to seven inches off of the floor of your sauna. If it’s too high, it’s only going to heat the space above the heater. If it’s lower, it’s going to heat more space. The second reason that your sauna might not be heating to temperature, is the placement of your stones.
